Communion/Vigil
At seven, the pattern
was already set;
the thread, which would run
throughout her life,
in place:
the white communion dress,
the white veil,
the white shoes:
cleansed of sin,
instilled with fear.
For now, she was afraid.
Her family was a constant concern.
She feared for their safety.
She worried about them.
She had absorbed the belief
that it was her job
to keep them safe.
